Frequently asked questions
What's a typical materials markup for AU tradies?
It varies by trade: residential plumbing 20–40%, electrical 30–50%, HVAC 25–45%, painting materials 15–25%. Volume-heavy trades (solar, large roofing jobs) tend to run lower markups on hardware and earn the margin on install labour instead.
Is markup the same as margin?
No — and mixing them up costs real money. Markup is calculated on cost (cost × markup% = profit). Margin is profit ÷ sale price. A 50% markup = 33% margin. A 100% markup = 50% margin. The calculator above shows both so you can see which one you're quoting on.
Should markup include GST?
Keep markup calculations pre-GST. Apply markup to the net (ex-GST) supplier cost to get the net customer price, then add GST at the end. Mixing GST into markup math leads to compounding errors. Use /tools/gst-calculator alongside this one.
How do I set the right markup for my trade?
Three inputs: what your time is worth, what competitors are charging, and what the customer values. Most AU tradies underprice by 10–15% — especially on materials. If you're winning >70% of quotes, your markup is probably too low. If you're winning <30%, it's probably too high (or the quote delivery is slow).
